Chemainus

Chemainus is located on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island.  The name Chemainus comes from the First Nations word "Tsa-meeun-is" meaning broken chest. The place was named after a man who survived a massive wound in his chest to become a powerful chief. Chemainus is now famous for its 39 outdoor murals. The tourist industry stemming from the murals helped rejuvenate the town after its large sawmill closed in the early 1980s. Chemainus is a great place to live, play and do business.
